Thomas Spranghers, Senior Researcher at Vives, recently gave a speech at the Roeselare Food Innovation Park to a group of international students in the field of agricultural and food innovation of the Faculty of Bioscience engineering of Ghent University.
He presented what VIVES and Inagro are doing in DODILog to valorize unavoidable crop losses and investigate the potential of insect mass rearing side streams and ethanol/hydrogen production to prevent future losses. This is part of the development of a wider Business Model for potatoes and cereals quality optimisation.
He also showed Vives´s HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography)** system which is used in the project to investigate the composition of potato, cereal and insect biomass both for nutritional as bioactive components which can be used to fight crop losses.
** HPLC is an advanced analytical technique used to separate, identify and quantify components in a mixture.
